POPPY AJUDHA LOW RIDE (FT. MAHALIA)

Poppy Ajudha was raised on a diet of rare groove, jazz and Motown records that her mother played, as well as the roots reggae and rocksteady that boomed from the Deptford nightclub owned by her father. Like any great jazz artist, Poppy understands and utilises the power of words to explore a number of crucial themes like female empowerment, womanhood, identity and heritage. Her new single 'Low Ride' ft. Mahalia is a radiant jazz-infused R&B jam. Gospel-like harmonies introduce the track with enticing words: "come with me baby I've gotta show you something, maybe we can get free". Poppy's vocals explore jazzy intonation as well as soulful pop melodies. A cool and sophisticated drum beat skips along, embellished with a free-roaming and undeniably sexy bass line. Brass parts add an air of joviality and laxity, with an illuminating effect. Birmingham-based Mahalia's maple-glazed vocals emerge half way through the tune, adding a softer, silky texture. The lyrics are sensual and sexually free, exploring ideas of "getting free" in the back of the car, and the seductive touch of a lover. 'Low Ride' is a true celebration of female sexuality. -Ellie Rose-Davies
